Lidkoeb, Copenhagen, Denmark

This is three floors of pure bar class, with each floor getting better than the last. Tucked away behind the Fotex supermarket in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, this 18th century apothecary building will certainly sort you out when you’re feeling low. The ground floor has tan leather banquettes and open fires, for some lounging about, drink in hand. The second floor is more refined, all dark and broody with leather Chesterfield seating and a cocktail-only bar. But it’s the top floor that had us swooning: a seating-only whisky bar, the drinks are illuminated in antique pharmacy bottles, because that’s how darn special they are. They’re serious about their Scotch – in fact, they’re ambassadors for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society – and beer is only tolerated as a chaser. We like their style.
