For the first time since 2009, Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes is helming a non-James Bond movie, and it looks incredible.
1917 follows two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon on Game of Thrones), during one grueling day in World War I. And if they don’t complete their critical mission to foil a planned attack, more than 1,600 men will die.
Here’s the official plot summary:
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission.
In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers — Blake’s own brother among them.
1917, which also stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth, opens December 25.
