Courtesy of “The Rock” himself, we bring you the first trailer for Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s Baywatch retread. Johnson introduced the clip on his Twitter feed Thursday, and it looks like a pleasant surprise.
Baywatch—an update of the iconic ’90s series that starred David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, and Yasmine Bleeth (remember her, fellas?)—stars Johnson as career lifeguard Mitch Buchannon, who leads a crew of beach rescuers Johnson refers to as “avengers of the beach but super dysfunctional” in his tweet. In the crew are Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass, and Ilfenesh Hadera. As the trailer makes clear, due to budgeting problems, the crew must add an Olympic gold medalist played by Zac Efron for a PR boost.
What follows is swimming trunk and bathing suit-clad cop drama that sees Johnson and his crew going up against beach-loving, boating criminals. There are dead bodies and explosions and some nicely-delivered one-liners from Efron and Johnson. The trailer doubles down on the movie’s comedy element as much as the action and makes it look like a lot of fun.
Baywatch makes a Rock-sized splash in theaters nationwide on May 19, 2017.
