Dan Patrick Wants You To Drink His Beer!

Specifically, his new beer, Audible Ale.

Specifically, his new beer, Audible Ale.

You’re bringing out your own beer, Audible Ale. Firstly – sweet! Secondly, how did that come about?

Well, I take my beer very seriously. Redhook was a sponsor of the show and I thought, ‘Why don’t I have my own beer?’ I first had Redhook’s beer back in the mid-’90s when the SuperSonics played the Bulls, and I remember going to the Metropolitan Grill where they had Red Hook on tap, and I always remember how good it was. When they offered to make us our own beer, I said, well, we want to go up to the brewery and taste it – we were very serious! So we sat down with the Brew Master and kept tasting.

Tough gig! How did you come up with the name?

We didn’t realize how many things were trademarked! We thought of a few – I was called Golden Boy in college by my basketball coach…because he hated me. So we thought Golden Boy Ale could be good, and Fritzy – one of the Danettes – came up with about 50 names, but when we started checking them, they were all taken. I said, ‘Let’s just call an audible here and try to come up with something.’ Someone said, ‘What about that? We’ll just call it Audible!’ I said, ‘Uh, yeah, of course, that’s exactly what I meant by it…’ I had no idea what I was doing.

How long did it take to get the beer right?

I think it took us six weeks to two months to get it right. When we went to the brewery they showed us the whole process – they probably told us secrets, but we were drunk by the end of the day, so we didn’t remember the secrets. We wanted something that would go along with wings, since we’re connoisseurs of wings. The first few were a little hoppy and we wanted to tone it down – we also wanted a sustainable taste that you don’t get tired of. There was no bullshitting with what we were looking for! I said to the Danettes, there is no other boss in America who’s going to say to you, ‘You just got through with your national show…now drink beer. I’m making you’. They’d be texting their wives, going, ‘I have to stay late, I’m drinking beer.’

It sounds like you guys would fit in well at Maxim.

Hahaha, right!

So what’s your ultimate beer, food, sports trifecta?

Audible Ale! Then wings. We usually do Buffalo Wild Wings because they have all the different sauces, so if you don’t like the true Buffalo, you’ve got options. I don’t discriminate, but it’s got to be finger food. We’ve had beer and wings with everything – football, shuffleboard, darts… everything!
