The thing about comedian Dave Chappelle these days is you just never know where he’ll show up. Latest example: an acoustic set performed by John Mayer at L.A.’s Hotel Café.

Mayer is in the process of rolling out a new album, The Search For Everything, and his set was apparently a big surprise. So imagine how much more of a surprise it was when Chappelle showed up and ended up rocking out with Mayer on covers of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” and Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” Watch some more of the fun below.

Any big fan of Chappelle’s Show will recall one of Dave’s most classic sketches incorporated Mayer and his axe.

Chappelle is not shy about jumping on stage and singing his heart out; his karaoke version of Radiohead’s “Creep” went viral a while back, and for good reason. It just fits a kind of otherworldly vibe the insanely talented comic carries with him anytime he jumps on stage.

No one knows where the hell we’ll see Dave next, but we’re sure whatever he does will be surprising and entertaining.
