Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs racing was the surprise winner of the Daytona 500 on Saturday, and he won by a matter of inches.
Hamlin barely beat out teammate Martin Truex Jr. after making his run for the finish line in the last lap of the legendary race, both drivers beating out previous lead driver Matt Kenseth.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who looked like a solid bet to win, led for 15 laps at one point. Then in a push to solidify his frontrunner status, Earnhardt spun out and ended up exiting the race with damage to the front end of his car.
Denny Hamlin’s 0.011 seconds lead time was the tightest margin in the history of the race, according to the Associated Press.
