Watford F.C., which is, among other things, Elton John’s side, is one step closer to playing in the Premier League next season after Sunday’s miraculous win over Leicester City in the second leg of their playoff semifinal — a result that included a spectacular double-save of a penalty, a last-gasp winner and a pitch invasion all in the 97th minute.
The tie was even 2-2 on aggregate when visiting Leicester was awarded a penalty and Anthony Knockaert’s stepped up to the spot with a chance to send his team to Wembley for the playoff final, in which a Championship team can earn promotion to England’s top division.
But former Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia made not one but two saves, Watford moved rapidly into the counterattack and Hornets striker Troy Deeney punched home a dramatic winner on the final kick that ignited a spine-tingling scene at Vicarage Road.
