Richard Linklater may have won praise for his Oscar-winning magnum opus Boyhood, but that’s not stopping him to returning to what he knows best: partying.
Everybody Wants Some, the upcoming film from the beloved director, is something of a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused, as Linklater himself put it. The film follows a gaggle of young men through sex, drugs and rock and roll, this time on the ivied walls and storied halls of a college campus in the ’80s. This is what I like about Linklater movies: the characters get older, but the plots stay the same age.
The trailer is far punchier and more vivid than Dazed and Confused‘s remarkable retro vibe, its focus on a more bro-y set of college men more like an ancestor of Old School or Animal House, but Linklater still channels nostalgia better than anyone else on the planet. It looks like a beautiful, lighthearted tribute to the classic ’80s screwball comedy — and, frankly, the perfect palette cleanser after this year’s emotional Star Wars roller coaster.
Everybody Wants Some hits theaters on April 15, 2016.
