Godzilla, King Kong, and Other Monsters Will Be Part of the Same Cinematic Universe
Legendary and Warner Bros. announced the epic deal today.
A wise man named Jay-Z once rapped “Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong / Lochness, Goblin, Ghoul, a zombie with no conscience.” And it looks like he was onto something.
Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull and Warner Bros.’ Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara announced on Wednesday that they’ve united to form a new cinematic franchise. Following their success with 2014’s Godzilla, this new universe “brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.”
They’ve also acquired other characters from the Godzilla Universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.
Three films have been announced so far: 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2018’s Godzilla 2, and 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Hoo boy do these people like to plan ahead.
Production starts on Kong: Skull Island on October 19th. The film, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Tom Hiddleston, Sam Jackson, Brie Larson, and John Goodman.
Here’s one thing we know for sure: MONSTER FIGHTS.
