Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, those newer Spider-Man movies) isn’t the first guy you’d think of to cast in a movie about America’s greatest war hero. But after checking out the new spot for Hacksaw Ridge, you might be convinced.
The new war epic from Mel Gibson tells the story of U.S. Army medic Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector who refused to bring any weapons as he headed into the Battle of Okinawa. During what was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific theater, Doss saved the lives of 75 soldiers while under intense enemy fire.
The movie, which also stars Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, and Hugo Weaving, opens November 4.
