We’ve heard rumors for a couple of weeks, but yesterday, Janet herself made it official: Janet Jackson is back. For the first time since 2008’s Discipline, there will be a new album from the most famous female Jackson, followed by a world tour.
Jackson’s 7-year sabbatical from music might have allowed people to forget how big Janet once was. Leading up to 2004’s Superbowl “wardrobe malfunction” and the subsequent, pearl-clutching hysteria (a breast is a breast!), Janet Jackson was a huge pop star, with hits like “Rhythm Nation,” “Love Will Never Do” and “That’s the Way Love Goes.” As Beyonce is today, Jackson was famed almost equally for her dancing and singing (the choreography in “Rhythm Nation” is some of the best of the eighties). Jackon’s unfair industry black-balling following the Super Bowl incident hugely hurt her career, so although it took a while, we’re glad to see she’s back in the proverbial denim jumpsuit.
