Master Chief Killed In Action In The Latest Halo 5: Guardians Trailer

“The Master Chief would never have agreed to special treatment, to be elevated above anyone else.”

The “keeping things as serious as possible” train kept a-rollin’ all night long with the latest Halo 5: Guardians “A Hero Falls” trailer that debuted last night during Sunday Night Football.

The live-action affair highlighted the death of Spartan-117, or the protagonist of Halo 1-4, Master Chief. It’s a eulogy broadcast in bars, on the train, and throughout the nation intercut with scenes of Chief’s bravery in battle, set in the year 2560.

Reportedly, the Chief was killed in action on October 27, 2560, but hey, this is Halo we’re talking about, so it’s likely yet another publicity stunt promoting Halo 5: Guardians and its new playable protagonists, Fireteam Osiris, including new frontman Spartan Locke. You know, the fact that Chief is “dead” and whatnot and fans should move on to Locke and the other characters.

I’m not buying it, especially given our earliest looks at the game that showed off Chief wandering through the desert. I’m thinking instead of a pithy live-action eulogy Microsoft Studios should have gone with eye-catching gameplay. But it’s shot well, and aesthetically pleasing, and I’d bet anyone who’s purchasing the game already has it preordered anyway.
