Underground wrestling is real, raw, and dangerous. A new short film produced by Al Jazeera takes us behind the scenes of one the most vibrant events around, Oakland’s Hoodslam. With colorful characters like El Chupacabra, DrugzBunny (a cocaine addicted eighties hustler), the Dark Sheik, and Link (as in the main character of the video game series Zelda), Hoodslam is as cool as underground wrestling gets.
And the wrestlers seem to be genuinely having fun instead of just working a job, an impression their wages apparently reflect. Check out the film below, which was produced by Al Jazeera’s AJ+ project:
