The New Avengers Trailer Is a Festival of Unremitting Violence

The Age of Ultron is very much not the Age of Aquarius.

The 5th Dimension’s 1969 hippie anthem “Age of Aquarius” croons about a dawning and quite groovy era when peace guides the planets and love steers the stars. The Avengers: Age of Ultron, despite any syntactical similarities, has nothing to do with that patchouli-scented utopia. It’s less peace and love, more punches and lacerations. The good guys are all here – Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, The Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver – each with his or her signature moves (the Hulk continues to suffer from a temper, etc.), but even such a show of benevolent force is barely a match for towering, evil Ultron. We’d be surprised if the good guys didn’t win in the end, but footage of Captain America’s broken unbreakable shield keeps us wondering.
