We’ll See New Stories From the ‘Matrix’ Universe, Not a Pointless Reboot
That’s more like it.
The annoying rumor that Hollywood was thinking of rebooting The Matrix seems to have been put to rest by screenwriter Zak Penn, who was said to be involved in the project. Thankfully, we’re not going to see someone else donning Neo’s shades, but new stories set in the same universe, much like Rogue One and the Young Han Solo film in far away galaxy where Star Wars took place.
Earlier reports had indicated this might be the nature of the idea from original Matrix producer Joel Silver, but Zak Penn recently took to his Twitter to make sure fans knew what was up. Penn, to be clear, agrees that the idea of rebooting one of the great sci-fi classics is ridiculous.
All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand.

Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it's a brilliant idea that generates great stories.

Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.

Penn couldn’t go into details but his mention of The Animatrix may be telling. The series of animated shorts—some written by original Matrix creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski—dug into the back story of that universe and deeper into the backgrounds of some secondary characters from the films.
There may be an argument for, you know, actually coming up with new fictional universes to explore as opposed to revisiting the ones from great movies in the past, but Penn is right—if you’re going back into the Matrix, it only makes sense to find new stories there. He couldn’t mention better examples of that sort of thing working well than Deadpool or Logan.
Will audiences take the red pill again, though? We’ll just have to wait and see.
