Oscar Noms Announced, Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, and ‘Deadpool’ All Snubbed

At this point, it is safe to say La La Land, with 14 nominations, will dominate at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. Still, there are plenty of surprises and snubs to be found on this year’s roster, released Tuesday, January 24.

Deadpool was nowhere to be seen, which is common for a superhero flick but nonetheless dismaying given that the critically derided Suicide Squad was at least nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Clint Eastwood was also shut out of the Best Director race for Sully, and his star, Tom Hanks, also failed to secure a nomination.

Anyone who checked the nomination list right as it was posted may need to check again. The original list erroneously reported Amy Adams had been nominated for Arrival and Tom Hanks for Sully, a major slip-up that likely got some intern fired. The list has since been corrected.
