Pee-wee Herman and Joe Manganiello Go on a Road Trip in the Trailer for ‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’
The unlikely duo have a beautiful bromance.
The first full-length trailer for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday just dropped, and dammit if it doesn’t actually look pretty good.
As we saw in the teaser released last month, Pee-wee is still frozen in perpetual pre-adolescence and an unchanging daily routine. But in Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, he will finally get out of his comfort zone — and Fairville, for what the trailer suggests is the first time. (I guess we’re just pretending Big Top Pee-wee never happened?)
The impetus for the impromptu road trip in Pee-wee’s Big Holiday is none other than Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike): Not someone you would expect to have a lot in common with Pee-Wee Herman, but the two become fast friends. At least until Pee-wee is waylaid on his trip by a group of lady bank robbers.
If you’re wondering why the sixty-something Paul Reubens looks almost exactly the same as he did in the 80s, he wasn’t cryonically frozen (or had plastic surgery): Reubens told the New York Times Magazine that his character was subject to a generous amount of digital retouching.
“Pee-wee doesn’t work, to me, with age mixed into it,” Reubens told the Times. “So I knew I wanted digital retouching, and that was my biggest concern from the get-go, with [producer] Judd [Apatow], when it came to budgeting, because it costs a fortune. I could have had a facelift and we would have saved two million dollars.”
Pee-wee’s Big Holiday debuts on Netflix on March 18.
