PlayStation 2 Games Are About to Find a New Home On PlayStation 4
Don’t send those classics to the Goodwill just yet.
If you’re like most gamers who’ve been riding the PlayStation train since its inception, you’re likely rocking a PlayStation 4 right now with an entire collection of PlayStation 2 games collecting dust somewhere. That’s why the fact that PS2 emulation has been confirmed for PS4 owners is such a huge deal.
When speaking with Wired, a representative from Sony confirmed that the company has been “working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” but declined to comment further. But despite Sony’s decision to remain decidedly tight-lipped about additional details, the emergence of the first PS2 games reported to use a special type of proprietary emulation already appear to be out.
The Star Wars: Battlefront PlayStation 4 holiday bundle released with a copy of Star Wars: Battlefront for the current-generation console, but also games like Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, all of which made their debut as PlayStation 2 titles. They all appear to be coded to run via special emulator, which makes us wonder what all’s coming up next for the console.
Emulation allows for the PlayStation 4 to run PlayStation 2 titles as if they were running on the actual console straight out of 2000. For some time, Sony has shied away from backwards compatibility with its newer consoles, so the simple fact the company has even broached the subject is an extremely big deal.
We’re still left with plenty of questions, though, that Sony has yet to answer for us. Which games will be compatible? Are we going to be expected to purchase licenses to play our old PlayStation 2 games? Is this just a cash grab? We’ll have to wait and see. But for now, you might want to hang onto that dusty old box in your closet. Dark Cloud on your PlayStation 4 may not be that far off.
