Apart from being an electrifying performer, Prince was a prolific songwriter, and not just in his own massive catalog. The eclectic musical icon, who died Thursday at age 57, also penned songs for dozens of other artists during his innovative career, including the likes of Madonna and Stevie Nicks.
What few people remember is that among the the several songs Prince penned for The Time reunion album Pandemonium lies a hidden gem: ‘Donald Trump (Black Version.)’
The love ballad is a funky tribute The Donald of the ’90s, the swaggering, larger-than-life real estate baron — and it’s pretty damn good. Here are some of the lyrics:
Honey baby, you truly know it. (You truly know it.)
You look good. Tryin’ your best to show it.
If I were you, I would. True love and affection.
These are nice (so nice), but when a money man walks in the room, girl, you look more than twice.
You look once (you look twice). Can I rap to you sugar tonight?
(chorus)
Donald Trump (black version), maybe that’s what you need.
A man that fulfills your every wish, your every dream.
Donald Trump (black version), come on take a chance.
A 1990’s love affair, the real romance.
We’re not sure if Trump approved of the song at the time, but if he did, he’s certainly not holding a grudge:
I met Prince on numerous occasions. He was an amazing talent and wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed!
