The Iowa State Cyclones were losing by 20 points in Thursday night’s game against in-state rival University of Iowa before storming back to win 83-82. That kind of drama calls for a little emotional release.
Cue the court storming. And for one journalist, cue the broken leg.
The Des Moines Register‘s Randy Peterson broke his tibia and fibula in the fracas that followed the Iowa’s State’s dramatic win. On Twitter Friday morning, he said the damage was done when he “locked legs with someone” and fell. He was not, as some suggested, trampled by the Crocs of a bunch of co-eds. Either way though, it was a scary scene as Peterson’s leg was placed in an air cast and he was taken off the floor on a stretcher.
Not to be a killjoy, but it’s probably time that school stop letting students rush the court. Yes, it’s exciting and something of a tradition, but it’s also dangerous. And as Thursday night’s incident shows, it threatens the health and well-being of America’s most valuable natural resource — people who make a living writing about sports.
