Rotten Tomatoes has announced which 100 films were best reviewed in 2017, and there were gems across genres—and languages—this year.

The list should be taken with a grain of salt. The Rotten Tomatoes formula of quantifying movies on the basis of “fresh” or “rotten” critic reviews has been criticized by cinephiles and many in the movie biz.

Some movies, by design, are more inclined to please more viewers while some of the strongest and most influential filmmaking can be inherently divisive. Moreover, the blanketed “fresh” or “rotten” judging system does not factor in the varying shades of quality.

Still, Rotten Tomatoes ensured every movie, whether it be Dunkirk, Wonder Woman, Logan or Spider-Man, got a fair shake. Movies were ranked by their adjusted scores, meaning it worked off a ratio of positive reviews to number of reviews overall. So you know you’re bound to enjoy just about every movie on its list.
