The top single off Sevyn Streeterâs 2021 album, Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz, is a collaboration with Chris Brown and A$AP Ferg called âGuilty.â The lyrics tell the story of an illicit couple who canât bring themselves to end their secret affair.
âYou donât really hear a lot of women touch on the subject of being with one person and not being able to stay away from another. It happens,â Sevyn tells us. âYou may find yourself like, I cannot help it and I donât feel guilty about it. I like concepts that spark conversations and speak about truth, whether itâs an ugly truth or not.â
Other guests on the record include Bia, Lucky Daye, Jeremih, and Lavi$h, but Brown is one of Sevynâs long-time collaborators.
âThe only person who could pull that off was Chris, he sings his face off. He sings with a lot of conviction and emotion. Obviously, we have a history of singing together and itâs always turned into something kind of magical. And adding A$AP Ferg, I always liked hearing a New York rapper come in on that type of beat.â
The song âFall Backâ meanwhile was inspired by a relationship she knew wasnât good for her, but indulged anyway. âLiquid Courageâ came after a night of drinking and then unloading on an ex-boyfriend. And âTabooâ flirts with the idea that too good to be true can be true.
But âGuiltyâ stands out not just for the steamy music video of women arriving at a mansion for a night of private pleasure with some studs. âIt has a James Brown sample from the song âThe Payback,â Sevyn explains. âIâve always loved that song âcause my grandfather used to love dancing to it.â
In that regard, âGuiltyâ reflects two sides of Sevyn, who splits her time between Los Angeles when sheâs working, and Haines City in central Florida where her relatives number in the dozens.
Amber Denise Streeter, as sheâs known there, went to high school with 23 of her cousins where her mom was the Dean and her uncle coached the football team. At church, she joined her cousins in a choir group called Voices of Praise.
âThe beautiful thing about church, no matter whether you sing well or not, they stand up and clap for you, telling you, âSing, baby, sing!â To me, that was my grandmas and my aunts and the neighborhood candy lady. Those were the women who gave me confidence to let me know I could do this,â she recalls.
Another boost came with her first recording contract at the age of nine, performing in the girl group TG4, which included a young singer named Keisha. A year later Se7en (as she was then known) tied for first place competing in Showtime at the Apollo where she sang âMy Funny Valentine.â
âThe first time I had ever been on an airplane, little country girl from Florida going to the Big Apple, singing at the place that all these greats had sung at, I was on cloud nine,â she beams, looking back.
âOn the day of my 16th birthday I left for my first tour. So, I didnât get a car for my birthday, I got a tour bus. I remember thinking this is so much better than a fucking car! When I turned 21, I was on tour with Beyonce, the I Am Sasha Fierce tour.â
After signing with Chris Brownâs CBE imprint in 2012, her EP, Call Me Crazy, But⊠put the world on notice. Sevyn was no longer a child, she had arrived. Featuring the platinum-selling single, âIt Wonât Stopâ with who else? Chris Brown. The EP charted on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums at No. 5. Her song credits for Brown include âYeah 3X,â âWet the Bed,â and âStrip.â
Other stars she wrote for include Kelly Rowland, Brandy, Alicia Keys and Ariana Grande, for whom she co-wrote âThe Way,â a top ten hit on the Billboard 100. Guests on Sevynâs debut album, 2017âs Girl Disrupted, included Gucci Mane, The-Dream, Ty Dolla $ign and Cam Wallace.
For the past two years Sevyn has been at home working up new songs that became Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz, her first independent album.
âThroughout the pandemic and quarantine, we had a lot of time to sit and be with ourselves,â she explains. âSome days we were happy, some days we were sad in having to deal with our emotions, some days we were anxious and wanted to be outside, some days we were lonely. I wanted to write from each of those places.â
