Sofia Vergara To Play Notorious Real-Life ‘Queen of Cocaine’ in Netflix Limited Series
Sofia Vergara will portray cocaine queenpin Griselda Blanco in a new Netflix limited series.
Sofia Vergara, the bombshell Modern Family actress and star of topless coffee-themed Instagrams, is taking on what sounds like her greatest role yet—portraying legendary cocaine queen Griselda Blanco in a new limited Netflix series.
Blanco’s murderous underworld legacy went mainstream after she was featured in the classic 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys, which recently spawned a spin-off docuseries on Netflix, Cocaine Cowboys: Kings of Miami. Now, Vergara is set to play Blanco in a limited series from several key members of the Narcos creative team.
Dubbed the “Queen of Cocaine,” Blanco was shot dead in the streets of Columbia in 2012 after serving nearly two decades in prison. According to the original Cocaine Cowboys doc, she was known as the “godmother” in Miami drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s, when she reportedly moved multi-ton shipments of cocaine and ordered countless murders.
Variety has more info on Vergara’s upcoming Netflix series here:
Titled “Griselda,” the series chronicles the real life of savvy and ambitious Colombian business woman who created one of the most profitable drug cartels in history.
A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the Black Widow and the Cocaine Godmother. The show will consist of six 50-minute episodes.
This won’t be the first time Blanco has been portrayed onscreen. Catherine Zeta-Jones played her in the 2017 film Cocaine Godmother and Jennifer Lopez is currently developing a Blanco biopic called The Godmother with STX Films.
