The Force Awakens Will Be Rated PG-13
A PG rating is more common for Star Wars films, but this puts The Force Awakens in a box office sweet spot.
J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, which cited “sci-fi action violence” for requiring children under 13 to be accompanied by a parent.
A PG rating has historically been more common for Star Wars films, though Revenge of the Sith also got a PG-13.
AStar Wars movie would likely kill at the box office even with an NC-17 rating, but here’s a fun fact brought to us by Entertainment Weekly: The top five highest-grossing movies in cinema history — Avatar, Titanic, Jurassic World, The Dark Knight, and The Avengers — have all been rated PG-13.
All signs are indeed pointing to The Force Awakens making box-office history when it opens on December 18th.
