Just because a movie was made from his book, you can’t expect Stephen King to love the end product. Best example is probably Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining, which King has been gleefully crapping on for nearly 40 years now.
Chances are, if the upcoming film based on IT was a real stinker, King would be kind of quiet right now. The Dark Tower wasn’t all that well-received, and while the author certainly tweeted about it and gave interviews, his enthusiasm about IT is noticeably much more vocal by comparison.
King “had hopes,” he says in the audio-only video above, however he wasn’t “prepared for how good it really was.“
“It’s something that’s different,” King continues, “and at the same time, it’s something that audiences are gonna relate to. They’re gonna like the characters.”
King says that for him, the whole thing is “all about character. If you like the characters—if you care—the scares generally work.”
Perhaps most important for King, who is keenly aware of how often the constant readers of his novels are unimpressed with their adaptations: “I’m sure my fans will enjoy the movie. I think they’re gonna REALLY enjoy the movie.”
IT is in theaters on September 8. We’ll see if the original master of clown-based horror isn’t just playing hype man then.
