In what might be the best use of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in a long, long time, comic book fans were blessed with a brand spanking new trailer for Suicide Squad on Thursday night, and boy, is it a doozy.
While the first footage from San Diego Comic Con provided a basic overview of the film and a first look at the pack of villains tasked with saving the world, the new trailer finally gave us a first look at the team in action, featuring some major plot points, an ominous potential villain, and clips of what might easily be Margot Robbie’s best role of all time.
We’ve still got time until Suicide Squad heats up the box office on August 5th, but until then, check out our in-depth trailer breakdown of our favorite (and most important) trailer moments below:
A Better Look at the Team
While we don’t know for certain what put the members of Task Force X behind bars, we do know that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) will assemble the ragtag team of insane criminals who ‘shoot people, eat people, and burn people’ to prevent the world’s destruction. Deadshot, Killer Croc, El Diablo, Enchantress, and Harley Quinn are just some of the names read during Rick Flagg’s roll call, but there’s plenty more where that came from. There’s no word as to where everyone’s allegiances truly stand (or if everyone will make it out alive), but prepare to see the best of the worst from the DC Universe come August.
The Origins of Harley Quinn
After witnessing Dr. Harleen Quinzel strapped to a table in the first Suicide Squad trailer, we guessed that her evolution into Harley Quinn would inevitably show up on the big screen. And our guess seems right: The Joker rises out of the vat of Ace Chemicals with Quinn in his arms for what seems like the origin of his loopy blonde bride. Should anyone ever complain about more Margot Robbie screen time?
Whatcha Up To, Enchantress?
Our eyes have been on Cara Delevingne and her take on Enchantress for some time now. With little known about the character and her absence from most promotional group shots, we assumed that it’s in fact her, and not the Joker, who will take on the role as main antagonist of the film. While separate from the Squad except for a few interactions with Rick Flagg in her human form, June Moone, one could assume her presence in the White House should not be taken lightly.
We’ve Got a Soul Stealer
Katana is another character that we haven’t heard much about, but it’s glad to know that the sword-wielding squad member is playing for keeps. Labeled as a volunteer and protector of leader Flagg, Katana goes about slicing and dicing her victims, all while stealing their souls with each kill. If that doesn’t sound painful enough, vapor-like skulls appear as they are sucked into her blade. Let’s hope she keeps that thing pointed down.
Fight to the Death
What the film lacks in obvious answers, it makes up for in bullets, bloodshed, and plenty of explosions. These bad guys aren’t your run-of-the-mill citizens, so don’t expect them to play by the rules.
Deathstroke, Is That You?
Ever since Scott Eastwood was cast in Suicide Squad, we wondered who he’d play on screen. For someone with an unidentified role showing up pretty prominently in the trailer, you can assume it’s a big one, and our guess is that he’ll don orange and black as Slade Wilson, better known to many as the mercenary, Deathstroke. As someone who eventually joins the ranks of infamous villains in Task Force X, it would make that sense Slade starts off as your average Joe until something turns him a wee bit crazy. While this is just a rumor for now, we wouldn’t be shocked for a movie of this caliber to be full of surprises.
Who Is the Big Bad?
First thoughts were the Joker before shifting to Enchantress, but to be completely honest, we have no fucking clue who the main Suicide Squad villain truly is. Our money is on this thing that’s completely obliterating a subway car, but there still isn’t much detail as to what he/she/it’s intentions are. Regardless, it still looks like a serious force to be reckoned with.
