Throwback Thursday: October 2004 – Avril Lavigne

Check out what we were up to in October of '04. Don't worry, we'll leave out our middle school class picture.

Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we’re going back to October of 2004, when Avril Lavigne was our punk rock princess, we got our first iPod, and Fergie was still considered an up-and-coming star.

Cover Girl: Avril Lavigne

Where You’ve Seen Her: When the new millennium hit, our radios had been taken over by bubble gum popstars and teeny bopper boy bands. After the whole “end of the world” scare we let it slide, but in 2002 our music prayers were finally answered in the form of Avril Lavigne, a Canadian singer who, you know, at least seemed kinda like she was a bit more punk…if you were a 12-year-old girl, that is. Still, we’re betting Britney Spears never “kicked someone in the box” before, so we’ll give credit where it’s due.

Where She Is Now: Now pushing 30-years-old, a lot has changed for the tatted-up singer. While Avril had been linked to multiple stars throughout the years, she finally settled down with fellow pretend-punk bander Deryck Whibley in 2006. Four years later the couple split, and just last month she walked back down the aisle, only this time with Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger (sorry, we don’t have much else to say about that one). As for Avril‘s singing career, the songstress has seemed to tone down her image and music, with her latest album Goodbye Lullaby being more mellow than those previously released. But no matter how much Avril strays from her adorable “bad girl” image, we know deep down she’d still kick us in the face if we tried anything shady, and we continue to love her for it.

Featuring:

Grab Bag

Our grab bags tend to be a tad heavy, but this feature showcased some pretty sweet music items. Really, who wouldn’t want a vinyl-playing turntable, or an old school clock radio? Honestly, we’d still take both, but we wouldn’t trade our modernized iPod for that original brick version for anything in the world.

Funk Machine

We can’t believe we’ve been following Fergie’s career since 2004; with her crazy vocals, ability to hang with the guys, and super-fit bod, it’s a no-brainer as to why the singer is still around. But in ’04, she was still an up-and-coming star, known only as one fourth of the Black Eyed Peas. Since then, she’s produced several successful solo albums, claimed a few Grammies, and reeled in husband Josh Duhamel. We’re going to guess the latter was the easiest of the three.
