Watch Tom Hardy as the Twisted Spider-Man Antihero in the First ‘Venom’ Trailer
“You used to be one of them. Now, you’re something else.”
One thing is obvious in this teaser trailer for Venom: Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy isn’t about to sleep on a character just because he’s in a superhero movie.
Of course this isn’t exactly Hardy’s first rodeo—he’s just morphed from DC’s jacked-up Bane in The Dark Knight Rises to Spider-Man’s unpredictable nemesis. And no offense to Topher Grace, who played Venom in Spider-Man 3, but an actor with Hardy’s intensity seems to be a perfect fit for the character.
Hardy plays Eddie Brock. Like Peter Parker, he’s a journalist—but he’s no wisecracking, dorky high school kid, he’s a man with some demons. So when his body is taken over by an alien parasite, the result is pretty damn dark.
“You used to be one thing,” Eddie growls in the trailer, “now you’re something else.”
Not much is known about Venom‘s plot at the moment past the fact a guy acquires superpowers through symbiosis with an alien creature. The movie, however, will likely have much more of a horror vibe than previous Marvel flicks.
We’ll know more when Venom premieres October 5, 2018.
