How To Make the Ultimate Negroni

The Negroni is pretty much the perfect summer cocktail. Crisp, refreshingly bitter and with a relatively low alcohol content, you can sip this classic Italian apéritif made of gin, sweet vermouth and Campari all day long without getting into too much trouble.

Naren Young, the bartender at Dante in Manhattan’s West Village, which New York magazine recently crowned “the absolute best negroni in New York”, graciously shared his can’t-miss recipe to make at home in honor of Negroni Week, which runs June 5 to 11.

The Ultimate Negroni

Ingredients:

1 oz. Bombay Sapphire

3/4 oz. Campari

3/4 oz. Martini & Rossi Vermouth

Directions:

Pour all ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice for 20 seconds to dilute. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice, preferably a large ice cube, and garnish with an orange wedge.

“Our House Negroni, the Ultimate Negroni, flies in the face of tradition, eschewing the standard 1:1:1 ratio,” says Young.

“We use a touch more gin in our recipe because I think the classic formula is too sweet and doesn’t make for a balanced drink. Also, ours is a touch less alcoholic, 2.5 oz., than the usual 3 oz. pour, so it makes for more leisurely summer day drinking.”
