Voldemort Is Getting His Own ‘Harry Potter’ Prequel Thanks to a Viral Fan Film
J. K. Rowling won’t be involved.
In news sure to thrill lovers of the Dark Arts, Warner Bros. has just approved a Harry Potter prequel centered on He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Okay, we’ll name him: Voldemort.
But there’s a catch. The film will not be directly based on source material from Harry Potter scribe J. K. Rowling. Rather, the basis will be a viral trailer for a fan-made film, which has garnered over three million views on YouTube.
A group of Harry Potter fans, Tryangle Films, recently unveiled their impressively produced teaser for VOLDEMORT: Origins of the Heir. The crew had raised over $17,000 from the trailer alone to complete the film.
Previously, Warner Bros. had opposed the film, which could have spelt legal trouble for the amateur filmmakers. But now, the production giant has officially approved of the project, meaning it is free to stream in full once completed.
So we won’t get to bask in seeing Ralph Fiennes once again bring to life one of fiction’s greatest villains on the silver screen. Nonetheless, fans can look forward to seeing some of the gaps in Voldemort’s story being filled.

Gianmaria Pezzatto, one of the founders of Tryangle, recently explained their purpose told Polygon: “We wondered, ‘What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back?”
“There are some clues in the books which have not been transposed at all in the movies, but a lot goes unspoken.”
