Watch Brad Pitt Play a WWII Army Sergeant in the New Teaser for “Fury”

Think Inglourious Basterds meets Saving Private Ryan.

In what may be his most promising role in quite some time, Brad Pitt returns to the silver screen later this fall in the war epic Fury, a WWII drama based on a true story. The first trailer was released today, and if it’s any indication of what we can expect from the feature-length film, we’ll be anxiously awaiting the November 14 release.

Written and directed by David Ayer – best known for Training Day, The Fast and the Furious, and End of WatchFury attempts to strike the right balance between riveting entertainment and accurate storytelling; a sizable feat that many war movies have tried (and failed) to do. In this case, the story centers on “Wardaddy” (Pitt) and his five-man band of brothers, who are tasked with striking at the heart of Nazi Germany, despite being severely outnumbered and outgunned.

It’s not the first time Pitt has played a World War II-era American serviceman. In 2009 he gave an excellent performance as Lieutenant Aldo Raine in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. As the leader of the Basterds and mouthpiece for some of the film’s most memorable one-liners, Pitt nailed the character’s uniquely American drawl and mannerisms so effectively and with such charm that it’s easy to forget that he had relatively minimal screen time.

While Fury looks to be more subtle – a more traditional, humane take on the experience of an American soldier fighting the Nazis – the trailer has us amped to see Pitt revisiting the archetypal war hero character at which he has proven so adept.
