WATCH: John McEnroe Covered a Nirvana Song And It Wasn’t Pretty

"He couldn't sing to save his life," sniped one earwitness.

Last weekend tennis hothead John McEnroe blew off steam in the Hamptons by performing a lively (and random) rendition of Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings.”

Performing for a star-studded crowd at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, N.Y which included his wife Patty Smyth (former singer/songwriter in Scandal), Saturday Night Live overlord Lorne Michaels and movie producer Harvey Weinstein, he didn’t embarrass himself too badly, judging from the video below, but maybe he should stick to sports.

McEnroe has long nurtured ambitions of being a rock star, even learning guitar licks from pals like Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Billy Squier and Foreigner’s Mick Jones. A Manhattan bar owner who allowed the retired tennis star’s band to play at his establishment several times told the New York Times Magazine in 2000 : “We loved having him, but he couldn’t sing to save his life.” Wouldn’t say that too close to his swinging arm.
