Purge movies are uniquely scary. There’s something extra nightmarish about the idea that on one special night of the year, all your neighbors could turn into homicidal maniacs.

We’re probably overthinking things, but it also just seems like the day after a Purge would be really awkward for survivors and would-be killers. Anyway, since Purge movies have been remarkably successful, Blumhouse Productions have headed back to the well with The First Purge

The title tells you where this is going but here’s the synopsis from Universal:

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

If the trailer is any evidence, there are some pretty current sociopolitical themes happening here, but as is always the case, it’s up the audience to interpret them.
