Watch The Dazzling First Trailer For David Bowie Documentary ‘Moonage Daydream’

Acclaimed director Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck) is turning his lens on the art and sounds of David Bowie with the upcoming movie Moonage Daydream.

It’s the first film to be approved by the David Bowie Estate, which granted Morgen unprecedented access to their collection of the supremely influential rock legend, who died in 2016.

Using “sublime, kaleidoscopic imagery, personal archived footage, unseen performances, and anchored by David Bowie’s own music and words,” Moonage Daydream aims to be the most immersive Bowie documentary yet. The trailer was shared ahead of Monday night’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight Screenings section.

In 2017, the Bowie estate presented Morgen with over 5 million assets for the film, including rare and never-before seen drawings, recordings, films, and journals. Morgen spent four years assembling the film and another 18 months designing the soundscape, animations, and visuals.

The movie’s sound team—featuring Bowie’s long-time collaborator, friend and music producer Tony Visconti and Oscar-winning sound mixer Paul Massey (Bohemian Rhapsody)—painstakingly remixed Bowie’s original audio for a theatrical environment.

Moonage Daydream is heading to theaters and IMAX this fall, and is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the spring of 2023. Watch the first official teaser trailer above.
