Weekend Award Show Weirdness: Miley Cyrus, Sacha Baron Cohen & Ron Burgundy

Featuring trophies, weed, murder, and a bicycle built for three.

The awards show season is upon us, and this weekend saw MTV rolling out the red carpet in Amsterdam for the European Music Awards, the Soul Train Awards hitting Las Vegas, and Beverly Hills hosting the Britannia awards. So what were the highlights?

Miley’s made no secret of her love for the sticky icky, so with the

EMAs

taking place in Amsterdam, we’re not all that shocked that the controversy-courting

cutey

would pull a

spliff

out of her purse and light up onstage. At least we think that’s what she did. Who can be sure?

The weed laws in Amsterdam are tricky

Sacha Baron Cohen kills some sweet old lady at the Brittania Awards

In accepting the (deep breath) Chaplin Britannia for Excellence in Comedy at the BAFTA LA JAGUAR Britannia awards in Beverly Hills last night, Sacha Baron Cohen committed murder. After being presented with one of Chaplin’s canes by Grace Cullington (Chaplin’s oldest surviving costar), Baron Cohen mimicked Chaplin’s waddle, leaned on the cane, and then accidentally pushed the wheelchair-bound Cullington off the stage, apparently killing her. For his part, Baron Cohen seemed nonplussed. “Grace Cullington is the oldest, no, sorry,

was

the oldest surviving [Chaplin co-star],” Baron Cohen later said. “I dedicate my award to her. This is obviously a tragedy. She has upstaged me. But on the bright side, what a great way to go, giving an award to me. Thus, she’ll probably make the Oscars In Memoriam segment.” Given his history as Ali G,

Borat,

and Bruno, it’s amazing that the crowd actually fell for the gag.

Kendrick Lamar wins best album at the Soul Train Music Awards

Yeah, so the Soul Train awards don’t actually air until December for some reason. We don’t know why, but it seems like a good excuse to watch the video for “Swimming Pools” by Kendrick Lamar, who walked away with the award for best album.

…And finally Ron Burgundy takes in Amsterdam’s sites with Daft Punk before the EMAs.

There’s really not much that needs to be said.
