Witnesses Thought Art Basel Stabbing Was Performance Art

Some even took pictures.

If you saw a woman lying helplessly on the floor covered in her own blood, instinct would tell you to jump in and help, right? You’d at least call 911 or scream for a doctor. Isn’t this common sense?

Well, not for the trendy folk at this year’s Miami Art Basel.

At an exhibition held by artist Naomi Fisher, gallery goers saw exactly that—a woman lying helplessly on the floor covered in her own blood. While the details are still hazy, theMiami Herald reports that the woman was slashed with an x-acto knife during a heated argument with another woman. As she lay on the ground bloodied and waiting for help, the room full of modern art lovers mistook the fracas for a cutting-edge piece of performance art.

Some event took pictures of the injured woman, potentially for Instagram.

Artist Fisher told theMiami Herald, “A guy walked up to me and said, ‘I thought I saw a performance, and I thought it was fake blood, but it was real blood.’”

The victim’s wounds were not serious. She eventually flagged down help and was wheeled away by paramedics to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The attacker, who has yet to be identified by police, was arrested on the spot.

Naturally, some mistook the paramedics and police as part of the act.
