Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron Are Teaming Up in a New Baywatch Movie

The Rock’s pecs have been reduced to last billing.

What will old-school fans of Baywatch think of the coming abs-tastic cinematic reboot starring Dwayne Johnson and former teen heartthrob Zac Efron? A movie about lifeguards featuring two famously shirtless actors may mean the opinions of old school fans don’t matter.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Efron’s addition to the cast in an exclusive:

After years of development, the project seems to finally be ramping up and in recent weeks it added Seth Gordon as director. Efron’s casting sets the movie up for a production start in early 2016, likely in February.

The story centers on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon.

Rebooting an iconic masterwork of nineties beach-based TV might have seemed ill-advised even with the addition of Dwayne Johnson and his box office Midas touch. Tumbling High School Musical‘s Troy Bolton into the foaming surf with The Rock finally focuses the overlapping zone in the theoretical Venn Diagram linking fans of the WWE and Disney musicals.

With Zac Efron tethered aboard and riding a cresting wave of nineties and early aughts nostalgia, Baywatchmay be 2016’s box office monster to watch.
