The book pairs classic cocktails with records from the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith and The Strokes.

It’s the simple pleasures in life that are actually almost priceless, like the joy of digging through crate after crate of records in an old shop, hoping to unearth a hidden gem. From there, the joy of dropping the needle on a new purchase can really only be amplified by one thing: Perhaps, your favorite cocktail.

Sibling co-authors and food & lifestyle writers André and Tenaya Darlington already hit on the perfect formula of sonic and gastronomic pleasure with the 2018 edition of Booze & Vinyl, the groundbreaking cocktail-meets-your-record collection pairing guide. This April (April 19, to be exact) the dynamic duo are back with Booze & Vinyl, Vol. 2 (available via Running Press).

Taken together, the two books total hundreds of recipe pairings alongside iconic albums (volume 2 offers up 70 new, legendary albums and 140 new recipes, more than enough to whet the appetites of the thirstiest music fans in your listening party crowd).

Booze & Vinyl, Vol. 2

The Darlington duo was inspired by the cocktail-sipping listening party sessions their parents hosted growing up. Even if your listening party is a little more subdued these days in terms of a crowd, this handsomely appointed hardcover book, packed with gorgeous imagery and subtle, classic cocktails, is an essential tome to display alongside your record collection and home bar.

There’s enough variety in this book to satisfy the most devout audiophiles and cocktail aficionados in equal measure, with cocktail pairings celebrating records as disparate as The B-52s and Beyonce’s Lemonade, not to mention LPs by everyone from Alanis Morissette to Aerosmith, Pavement and The Strokes.

Each pairing is presented with an A side and B side, like your favorite records (side A of The Strokes’ Is This It offers up a surely delicious, garage rock-approved blend of lager, lime juice and hot sauce, for instance).

There’s certainly no shortage of recipes to choose from, but we went ahead and picked out a surefire crowd pleaser as a preview (remember, you’ll have to wait until April to get your hands on this book).

Here’s side A of the entry dedicated to the Notorious B.I.G., a smooth sipper we know Biggie himself would enjoy:

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 1/2 ounce each amaretto and fresh lemon juice
  • Lime peel, to garnish

“Drop the needle” on this one by shaking the rum, amaretto and lemon juice with ice before pouring the mixture into a rocks glass over a single large ice cube. Add your lime peel garnish and cue up Biggie’s iconic Ready to Die. Oh, and make another one for us, will you?

The second edition of Booze & Vinyl drops on April 19 via Running Press for $26. Mark your calendars accordingly.
