Johnnie Walker‘s final installment in its limited-edition Blue Label series is perhaps the most striking yet. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Glenury Royal, which comes in a beautiful blue bottle, is coming to the top shelves of fine liquor stores near you.

What’s up with the “ghost” in the name? That’s the fascinating part, and it may explain one reason this rare spirit is pretty pricey.

Johnnie Walker said in an announcement that Blue Label Ghost & Rare Glenury Royal was blended “with irreplaceable ‘ghost whiskies’ from Scotch whisky distilleries that have long since closed,” in addition to “incredibly rare Single Malts.”

Glenury Royal, which was first founded in 1825, closed in 1985. In its time it became one of three Scottish distilleries with a royal title, and that still holds some weight even now, long after it ceased to exist.

If you doubt the rarity of what’s inside that blue bottle, know that Johnnie Walker says that “there have only been eight official bottlings of Glenury Royal in the past 23 years.”

This release contains ghost whiskies other than the Glenury Royal as well — rarities such as single malts from Glen Elgin, Glenlossie, and Cameronbridge.

Look for Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Glenury Royal in October 2019. It will be available everywhere while supplies last for approximately $350 per bottle.
