Woodford Reserve Releases Coveted ‘Double Double Oaked’ Bourbon

Woodford’s limited-edition bourbon returns for 2024.

From superlatively strong batch-proof bottles to more delicate expressions finished in Sonoma wine barrels, there’s no shortage of covetable Woodford Reserve whiskeys to hunt down. But to score the latest Double Double Oaked bourbon, at least for its retail price, may require a little more effort than just adding to cart.

The limited-edition annual release starts with Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, which is already matured in separate, charred oak barrels, the second being deeply toasted as well. That fully mature bourbon is then aged for an additional year in another heavily toasted, lightly charred oak barrel, imparting extra spice. See the official tasting notes from Woodford Reserve below:

  • Color: Roasted coffee bean.
  • Aroma: A robust medley of rich maple syrup, dark butterscotch, brittle caramel, bittersweet chocolate, burnt marshmallow and sweet hickory smoke notes dominate the nose.
  • Taste: Rich dried cherry and cranberry fruit swim in a blackberry jam brightened with hints of ripe apple. Chai tea and warming clove notes develop to spice up the palate.
  • Finish: Warm and drying with a lingering clove character.

“We are excited to offer one of our most treasured and exclusive annual bourbon releases again this winter,” master distiller Elizabeth McCall said in a statement. “This is the perfect bourbon for both new and experienced drinkers with tasting notes of burnt marshmallows, dried cherry, and bittersweet chocolate.”

As Kentucky.com points out, Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked is among the most sought-after Woodford Reserve whiskeys, having sold out in less than a day over each of the past few years.

This year, it’s available exclusively in Kentucky at the Woodford Reserve distillery in Versailles and select local retailers for $79.99 per 375-ml bottle—a limit of two per customer is enforced. It went on sale on January 23, so your best bet now may be to peruse the aftermarket. Happy hunting.
