In your younger days, perhaps you called out “shotgun” as you were about to chug a beer or edge your friends out of the front passenger seat (or both). But now you’ve grown up (somewhat) and have a home. So when you say that word, you’re talking about defending yourself and family.
As opposed to Standard’s new less-than-lethal, intentionally orange DP-12 LTL that’s made specifically for law enforcement agents or Fostech’s superfast Origin-12 that’s obviously for stopping zombies in their tracks, these five shotguns offer the ease and reliability you need for every-second-counts personal protection.
1. Remington 870 Express Tactical 7-Round ($443)
At under $500, this easy-to-wield gun with an 18 1/2-inch barrel is the most economical of the group. But more importantly, its silk-smooth twin action bars provide the dependability you need in those moments when you really don’t want to be fumbling around.
2. Mossberg 590A1 9 Shot ($657)
When you need to fire off multiple rounds, it’s nice to know your hand won’t slip off the fore-end during the quick pump action. And you’ll be pumping a bunch, since this super sturdy gun offers a reassuring nine shots.
3. Mossberg 930 JM Pro Series ($790)
Built in consultation with one of the world’s best shooters, Jerry Miculek, this semi-automatic makes a heck of a competitive gun. But with a full-contour stock for minimizing recoil, it’s just the right blend of simple and instinctive for home use as well.
4. FN America SLP MK1 ($1,429)
Though this gun’s over 8 pounds without any ammo in it, its low profile, adjustable folding rear blade and red fiber-optic front help make it forgiving. Plus, the interchangeable comb inserts and recoil pads mean you can easily customize it to your personal needs.
5. Remington Versa Max Tactical ($1,456)
Oversize controls and a rubbery stock make this gun easy to handle even with clammy hands. A smart system cycles the action with only as much gas as it needs. And a shallow-V-and-bead sight system works well both at in-home distances and longer ranges outside.
So this last (and most expensive) option may be the best all-around gun in the category. But you’d do well to stop intruders with any of the lot.
