It Turns Out Drinking Responsibly Actually Makes You More Attractive, According to Science
Drinking moderate amounts of booze just might get you laid.
We already know that a cold beer can make you better in bed, but does drinking actually make you handsome enough to land a girl there in the first place? Absolutely, but not because of beer goggles: According to a new study, simply engaging in social drinking in the right setting can make you seem more attractive to the opposite sex — so long as it’s in moderation.
The study, conducted by researchers at University of Houston and published in the journal Addictive Behaviors, surveyed 594 straight undergraduate students from a an unnamed southern university. The students were shown 25 photographs of people’s faces from the opposite sex accompanied by label depicting their drinking habits, ranging from “this college student frequently drinks heavily” to “this college student is a recovering alcoholic and therefore abstains from using alcohol.” The subjects were then asked to rate each photographed on a 1-7 scale for attractiveness, intelligence, likability, and approachability.
The results indicated that social drinker were the most attractive group, followed by the recovering alcoholics and then those who simply abstained from drinking. But more tellingly, its the heavy drinkers who came in dead last. No matter how objectively attractive the faces presented during the experiment were, heavy drinkers came in far below even recovering alcoholics and teetotalers.
Why is this? The researchers say it’s due to the phenomenon of homophily, our tendency to associated with people who think and behave like us. College students love to drink and want to be around people who drink, so this seems like a no-brainer, but despite the prevalence of binge-drinking on college campuses, students still tend to be put off by people who spend their days in the bottom of a bottle.
The message is clear: People much prefer the gentleman who indulges in a few cocktails over the beer-soaked booze hound pining for a final shot at last call. As it turns out, drinking in moderation isn’t just the safe and responsible thing to do, but it’s pretty damn sexy, too.
