You’ve reached that time of the year where you make resolutions that, to be honest, you probably won’t keep. You’ll want to save money, but that’s impossible when your apartment costs an arm and a leg. Cooking more at home sounds realistic, but you’ve yet to try every item on the menu at Taco Bell. Did we mention that hobbies are for the weak and frivolous?
The New Year’s resolution that we deem most reasonable is getting your fat ass off the couch and into some fitness gear. No, straining your thumb with each Tinder swipe does not count — you need to actually work out your entire body in order to consider it exercise. Everyone starts the year off with new running shoes and a fresh gym membership, but a couple weeks and 10 pounds later, and you’re back at your desk at work with a Chipotle bowl and belt buckle undone.

Here at Maxim, we want you to stick to your word going into 2016. Fitness expert and personal trainer Don Saladino of Drive495 (the guy who trains superheros like Deadpool‘s Ryan Reynolds and Captain America‘s Sebastian Stan, among others) shared his expert tips how to actually get motivated into working out in 2016. By following his guidelines and expertise exactly, you should be sweating already.
1. Set the bar (but not too high): “New Year’s resolutions become failures most of the time because people tend to set the bar too high. It’s time you lowered your expectations a little. Do not jump into a crazy program. Slowly turn up the volume, and take a day off from exercise after two days of training. Keep your mind sharp and wanting more.”
2. Be consistent: “Follow the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of your week needs to be spot on. Allow 20 percent for error. Rest, hydration and a proper diet are three of the best fat burners for your body. They ensure recovery and help you detox.”
3. You can always find time: “At the very least, do a 20 minute workout 4 days a week. Your body will not need much. Look at it as sparking the fire. We need to get your metabolism cranking.”
4. Bundle up (and such it up): “Even in the winter time, you need to get outside. Breath the fresh air and move around. You won’t regret it.”
5. Actually have a good time: “Enjoy the process. Working out shouldn’t be work unless you’re training for the olympics. Try to have fun. There are so many different training programs. Start with something your intrigues with and enjoy it.”
