Audi Sport Is Ready to Challenge Mercedes-AMG And BMW M
The German high-performance divisions are going to war.
Audi will more than double the number of RS models from its Audi Sport high-performance division in the next year and a half, reports Britain’s Autocar magazine in and interview with Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann.
Today, Audi’s division that is dedicated to taking on Mercedes-AMG and BMW M has seven models, including the zoomy R8, and RS editions of the A3, Q3, TT (coupe and convertible), A6 and A7. But within 18 months, Winkelmann said, the brand will roll out eight more RS models.
It isn’t apparent which models that will encompass, but the A1, A4 and A5 are candidates, and there could be even more intense versions of the R8 in the works.
Despite the bold claim of so many new models, Winkelmann would not be drawn into revealing details. ““We have a lot of plans but are not revealing them yet,” he said. “It is better to under-promise and over-deliver.”
Audi’s corporate parent Volkswagen Group moved Winkelmann from its Lamborghini division earlier this year, where he developed a reputation for delivering impressive products, so we can’t wait to see his influence on Audi’s RS hot rods.
