The BMW i8 Just Debuted One of The Trippiest Paint Jobs Ever
Be warned: This mind-bending color scheme might make you dizzy.
BMW will sell a limited-production run of custom-painted i3 and i8 electric cars next year featuring a striking silver-fades-to-blue paint scheme. The style was developed by Italian custom car shop Garage Italia for a pair of concept cars shown at the Paris Motor Show, and now BMW has revealed its intent to sell cars wearing this livery.
The BMW i8 Garage Italia Crossfade employs the artistic concept of pointillism, with triangular dots bridging the car’s original Protonic Blue metallic paint at the rear with the Prontonic Dark Silver metallic applied to the front, with a 3M wrap bearing the dots between.
The two colors are never actually mixed, but the eye perceives a gradual blending as the size of the dots changes.
“Technological development and constant search for innovation are common key values to both Garage Italia Customs and BMW,” said Lapo Elkann, founder of Garage Italia Customs in a press release. “The CrossFade project was a great opportunity to create something beyond the traditional idea of car painting, generating amazing effects with a unique geometrical pattern.”
BMW will offer the paint scheme in both the racy i8 sports car and the efficient i3 economy hatchback. We’ll take the i8, thank you.
