GMC is officially reviving the Hummer as an all-electric truck with some seriously impressive performance figures that rival even the Tesla Cybertruck.
The American automaker’s first all-electric truck will boast 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb-ft of torque and a blistering zero-to-60 mph time of just three seconds flat. Autoweek reportedly called GM “to make absolutely sure there wasn’t a misplaced comma” in the torque number, and were assured the eye-popping figure was indeed correct.
We’ll have to wait to answer other questions regarding size, gearbox (or more likely, lack thereof) and whether eco-conscious Hummer fanatic Arnold Schwarzenegger will be among the truck’s first customers. “Incredible on- and off-road capability” are promised, which implies that the it’ll have all-wheel drive.
Some answers may be provided when the Hummer EV is featured in a 30-second Super Bowl LIV commercial sometime during the game’s second quarter on Sunday—see a teaser for that above. CNN Business reports that LeBron James will appear be in the Hummer Super Bowl ad, though the latest from GMC didn’t mention anything about the NBA star’s involvement.
“GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC Hummer EV takes this to new heights,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising.”
The GMC Hummer EV will be fully unveiled on May 20, 2020 and built in Michigan at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck factory, the company’s first dully dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant, according to the Detroit News.
