Steve McQueen’s Classic Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL Can Be Yours
The legendary “Bullitt” actor drove this beautiful Benz right up until his passing in 1980.
Steve McQueen’s movie rides and real-life driving/riding prowess have inspired many limited edition Jags, Triumphs and Mustangs, and now Bring a Trailer is offering a rare opportunity to buy a vehicle actually owned by the King of Cool.
This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 was owned and piloted by McQueen from 1972 until 1980, the year of his passing. The German luxobarge’s name alludes to its 6.3-liter V8 with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, which is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
According to Robb Report, the black exterior, suspension, brakes, engine and gearbox were all refurbished by Germany’s Kienle Automobiltechnik in 2012 for around $138,000, helping to undo the effects of time and an 81,000 worth of mileage. It rolls on silver 14-inch Bundt alloy wheels clad in Vredestein Sprint tires.
The seller warns of interior ware on the black leather-upholstered bucket seats and rear bench, but Kienle renewed wiring, floor insulation, trunk trim, and AC hoses. The dash is finished in a particularly retro zebrano wood and houses a Becker Mexico cassette stereo, a 160-mph speedometer, and analog clock and auxiliary gauges.
Bidding for the Ex-Steve McQueen 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 is currently at $70,555 with just hours left in the sale.
