Elon Musk Unveils Tesla Model Y, An Electric SUV That Drives Like a Sports Car
“It has the functionality of an SUV, but it will ride like a sports car.”
Elon Musk just unveiled the Tesla Model Y at the company’s California headquarters—here’s everything you need to know about the ultra-quick new EV.
“It has the functionality of an SUV, but it will ride like a sports car,” Musk said.“This thing will be really tight in corners. And we expect it will be the safest midsize SUV in the world by far.”
The all-electric crossover is a smaller, more affordable version of the Model X SUV Maxim test drove during an especially brutal winter storm in California. And it doesn’t have those flashy-but-impractical Falcon doors.
In fact, the Model Y is billed as a follow-up to the “everyman” Model 3 sedan, with the addition of third row seating.
It will be offered in four different variants with different price tags and performances specs, the quickest of which hits 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
Jalopnink reports:
The Standard Range model will get 230 miles of range with a top speed of 120 mph, a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.9 seconds, with a starting price of $39,000.
The Long Range model will get 300 miles of range with a top speed of 130 mph, a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.5 seconds and a starting price of $47,000.
The Dual Motor AWD model will get 280 miles of range with a top speed of 135 mph, a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.8 seconds and a starting price of $51,000.
The Dual Motor Performance model will also get 280 miles of range, with a top speed of 150 mph, a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a starting price of $60,000.

Charge times weren’t reported, but a Tesla press release states that the Model Y will be compatible with forthcoming V3 Superchargers, which can juice up batteries at a rate of 1,000 miles per hour.
Fans of the company will recognize the Model Y’s gigantic panoramic glass roof from the Model X. Other features include a 15-inch touchscreen, Tesla Mobile compatibility, remote unlock and pre-condition modes, location tracking, and more.
Deliveries for the Model Y Performance and Long Range models are expected to begin in fall of next year, followed by the Dual Motor AWD and Dual Motor Performance models in spring of 2021.
