RM Sotheby’s deals exclusively in classic cars. Despite being a 2022 model year, the beautiful Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is unequivocally a classic of the instant variety.
Auctioned in November, this is one of only 30 production versions of the first street legal ride to break the 300-mph. Former Le Mans winner and test driver Andy Wallace, who previously set the world speed record back in 1998 with a McLaren F1, pushed the model’s prototype to 304.773 mph on Germany’s Ehra-Lessien test track in 2019.
“It’s inconceivable that a car would be capable of this,” Wallace said after making hypercar history. “But the Chiron was well prepared and I felt very safe – even in these high-speed ranges.”
Though the production version and its 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 are limited to a 273.4-mph top speed, there are numerous performance-minded pieces of the Chiron Super Sport 300+ that distinguish it from other members of the Chiron family.
The lightweight carbon fiber body—elongated to aid in aerodynamic flow—wears bespoke “Air Curtains” over its corners to reduce high-speed air pressure and rides on magnesium wheels. Outlets on the wheel arches reduce drag push the body into the tarmac, while a clever diffuser also helps compensate for the lack of traditional rear spoiler.
All 30 sold-out examples were finished in Black Carbon with Jet Orange racing stripes, and the understated interior echoes the exterior color scheme with applications of Alcantara and leather.
This one, ordered in December of 2019 and delivered in October of 2021, was driven just 1,416 miles from new. The owner was probably busy driving the 17 other priceless rides in their so-called “Gran Turismo Collection,” including four of the greatest Ferraris ever made, two Bugatti EB110s, and three rally racers from the legendary Group B series.
This 2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ sold for just over $5 million November 5 in London.
