The U-Boat Worx NEMO Is World’s Lightest Personal Submarine

The only way the NEMO personal submarine could be any more intriguing is if it flew through the air as well. But as cool and futuristic as it looks, this two-person tiny submersible is still confined to underwater use. Then again, for anyone who can afford it, that’s more than enough.

Through extensive testing and research, U-Boat Worx has created—at 5,510 lbs—what the company claims is “the lightest manned submersible ever conceived.”

The NEMO is the width of two jet skis and easily towed by an average-sized vehicle over land and carried by many types of boats, with a low (just 5 feet) profile from deck to the top of the cab.

Once you’re underwater you learn just how versatile this submersible really is. It’s equipped with a navigation setup that can move at up to three knots, floodlights to illuminate obstacles, treasure, or wildlife, and can dive to 330 feet.

The fantastic view from NEMO’s cockpit might be its biggest selling point for many. On its website, U-Boat Worx explains that they’ve reinforced the sub’s body with a “state-of-the-art acrylic pressure hull” and that the “surrounding structure of the submarine was designed to provide an unobstructed view into the ocean.”

This might be just about the best underwater experience you could have without toting SCUBA gear or joining a scientific expedition, and you’ll get to feel like James Bond in the bargain.

Unsurprisingly, this thing doesn’t come cheap. You can own a U-Boat Worx NEMO for (approximately) $1,060,800 USD. For more details, head to nemo-submarine.com
